When your engine is running rough, you take it into your mechanic to see what is wrong. If their analysis indicates that you need major engine repairs, what do you do now?
Even when major repairs are indicated, not all problems mean that the major components have to be replaced. A portion of the engine may be serviced, thereby saving you on costs. There are usually three choices to address major mechanical engine problems:
NEW COMPONENT REPLACEMENT – REPLACE THE ENGINE, CYLINDER HEAD, OR BLOCK WITH A RE-MANUFACTURED OR NEW COMPONENT. THIS MIGHT BE A LONG BLOCK, SHORT BLOCK OR CYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY.
REPAIR EXISTING PARTS – (SUCH AS A REBUILD) DISASSEMBLE THE ENGINE AND REPAIR OR RECONDITION COMPONENTS THAT ARE WORN OUT.
OR LASTLY TO TRY TO UTILIZE A USED REPLACEMENT – THE ENGINE OR COMPONENT CAN BE REMOVED AND A USED ENGINE OR COMPONENT CAN BE INSTALLED IN ITS PLACE. (EAT WOULD NOT USE THIS METHOD – ONLY THE OTHER TWO ARE OPTIONS, DUE TO QUALITY OF WORK REQUIREMENTS.)
Each of these repair solutions has its advantages and disadvantages.
Using a “crate engine” assembly – The advantage of purchasing a new factory or OEM head, block, or whole engine is an increased chance of the initial estimate covering the entire repair. This makes the cost predictable, but may be initially more expensive than the other two.
Repairing individual work out engine components – The advantage of repairing is that the cost may look lower than purchasing a crate engine, but is often less predictable. There is no way to accurately estimate the total cost until the engine has been disassembled and thoroughly inspected, and, if the damage is severe, it may end up needing the replacement engine or assembly after all.
Using a “used” engine or heads – (Note that EAT Auto does not use used parts in any repair – this option is just included for the purposes of this article)
