The California Smog Check Program requires most vehicles that were manufactured in 1976 and later to participate in the biennial (every two years) Smog Check program. A smog check is not required for cars 6 years old or newer, motocycles, diesel powered vehicles manufactured before 1998 or weighing over 14,000 lbs, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 or older.
What to look for
California requires smog checks for motor vehicles in order to cut down on harmful emissions. If your vehicle releases over a specified maximum level, it will not pass. A vehicle that does not pass the smog check must be repaired until it passes, unless you qualify for a low income waiver. The smog technician must locate and verify that all emissions components are present and properly connected.
Different era cars utilize different smog systems, based on the available technology of the time. Some repair stations are better equipped to repair certain types of smog systems, depending on the year of the vehicle.
Along with components, the smog technician will also be looking for any defective or disconnected electrical connections, vacuum hoses and/or any pipe or plumbing which would affect engine performance and ultimately increase harmful smog emissions.
